10 September On a slightly chilly, grey day we set off from Rockport to sail to Provincetown on Cape Cod via The Stellwagen Bank with high hopes of spotting whales. As the Stellwagen Bank rises from the bottom of the ocean it creates upwelling currents that bring nutrients to the fish, plankton, squid and krill that are in turn, food for whales.
As we were motoring along, the wind not being enough to sail, we were both up on deck (rare now as it is quite a bit colder so Louise likes to hover below) and began to wonder if we will see any whales when, right on cue, they appear we dont quite believe it!

We are entranced, watching 2 in the distance, spouting, rising up and down (oh you are going to love the all the photos - very small dark lumps in a grey landscape) when suddenly 3 Humpback whales surface about 15 feet away from the boat we both get the scare of our lives what a wonderful experience and of course we miss what would be the only good photos as we are too busy looking at these huge animals. A great time but no one has ever mentioned whale breath, a fishy stale cabbage smell, from now on bad breath just has to be known as whale breath
