Swagmans Sailing Blog

Come on in and say hello via a 'comment'. We've cruised our Hanse 46' sailboat from UK to Egypt to the Caribbean mainly two handed from 2004 to 2008 and enjoyed every minute. We are back temporarily in the UK - but sunshine beckons us again for summer 2009.

January 2009 - ALL CHANGE for this New Year

Posted at 4:39 PM, Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Hi Blog,

Had a great festive break with family and pals, some super skiing in the Spain, and a bitterly cold start to our British New Year.

But we've also had one of those 'once a year' big family chats and get some clarity on where we are all going.  And maybe how we can help each other get there!

It's led to revised plans for our summer - and in the meantime our  builders have commenced work on the new house.

So its all bulldozers and dust.  Assuming this cold weather does not slow them down, we anticpate a full rebuild by April.  Anticipate we'll be slowly edged towards moving out so as to allow them to do their job - maybe in Feb.  We're hanging in for the time being.

Far too cold to consider moving onto the boat for the duration.  Most mornings the pontoons are covered with frosted ice so getting to the loos is not an easy option - so we've sorted moving in with Rob and Louise for a few months.  They are sorting the barbed wire dividers as we speak.

But the big boaty news is we've given lots of thought (and bought all the pilots and charts) for the Baltic, but resolved due to this increadibly chilly weather, not to risk a second winter with cold as the only option.

So before we change our minds one more time, I've paid and booked  a spot for Swagman down south on the Portuguese Algave.

So its not north we're headed tihs summer, but down towards even more sun!

We're going to see out this construction work by spring, continue to build fitness so as to repeat the London to Brighton Bike ride mid June, then hot foot it away across the Channel for N and S Brittany this summer.  Lotsa pals have comitted to join us for short breaks on this coast, with it's staggering scenery and great gallic music and festivals.

So North and South Brittany, then to the North Spanish Rias we've always shot by before, then a slide down the Atlantic Portuguese coast to Lagos.  It should see us away for at least two months but will leave Swagman placed so we can access her in the sun next winter.

And we'll close the passage in September at Lagos just around the corner on the appraches to the Med.  It is cold water, but super coastline and great local sailing with interesting places like Culartra, Saville and Cadiz not far away.

We've spent one winter here before on our old Swagman (a Grand Soleil 42) and stopped by on this one also - so know the loca services, town and bars, the marina staff, as well as the region.

The real decider is the winter weather, which combined with good value regular winter flights from our local regional airports, will make it a spot to slide off too when next winter here gets too much to bear.

So that's it.  Next week we're off for another ski - in Italy this time with a big mob.  Then head down bum up at work until a last ski in March.  Then finish off new home with funishings etc.  The the beginning of another summer - and awayyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Is it right for a sixty something to wish away their time?  Can't help it.

JOHN

The plans sound really good. I'm envious. Europe sounds great.

Return to the Med

Posted by savarna at 3:49 AM, Friday, January 9, 2009

The Algrave seems like a good call to me John. The Baltic I reckon would be good cruising in summer - the problem is I think that summer only lasts 6 weeks. And then the challenge is which 6 weeks and does week two follow week 1? Good to hear the house is under way - normally it is the kids returning home so a change to see it the other way around! I liked the slide show - when on earth do you get time to do all this stuff. Pam and I are also into cycling and snow skiing!!

Cheers
Keith

Good to hear you're OK and who knows, with our southward trip planned we may just catch up on the water this summer. Guess we'll arrive in Lagos early and knowing us - shoot over and poke our head into the Med. If you are even close by the western end - it will give us that chance to share another cleansing ale.
How do we fit is all in? It's easy mate.
When you hit that 60 wall you'll find it real easy to jam in lots more - desperation kicks in!
You both have a great year and keep in touch.
JOHN xx

Your change of plans

Posted by tpeacocke at 2:24 AM, Monday, January 12, 2009

Hi John, I have just poped in from the BBQ to check on emails and to put a few more tinnies in the beer fridge. A couple of blue nose and a Hapuka caught today by White Isle in the Bay OF Plenty, from my son Ali's runabout. Jenny is checking that the grandies are not drowning each other in the pool.. and slapping on a bit more lotion. Now how did you say that weather is over there again?... Ted

Hi Ted

Moving on

Hey John, Sue,

Firstly merry Xmas and happy new year to you both. The plan to head down south again sounds great. Perhaps you'll be in place before we pass through that area again (October ish). Mind you the Baltic sounds great too. We had plans to get Ghost up there in 2008 had we not kicked off the larger trip.

Best regards

Brad and Kat

Wintering in S. Portugal

Posted by Anonymous at 4:08 PM, Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Greetings! Read your response from August 28, 2008 regarding an inexpensive place to winter a 51' cat. I'm dying to make an offer on a boat in S. France (against another buyer so time is important) but cannot take possession until spring '10. I'm in the States (west half!). Seller interested in enjoying the boat until mid-Oct. '09 but then I need a very inexpense place to keep her for 6 mo. or so. How would I contact someone in Olhao to get a price? Can you guess at the costs? Would I pay a mooring/slip fee or keep her at anchor? Do you have an e-mail where I can contact you directly? Other ideas? jennifer@coldreams.com

I'll email you directly with more info on Olhao and Culatra.
