Come on in and say hello via a 'comment'. We've cruised our Hanse 46' sailboat from UK to Egypt to the Caribbean mainly two handed from 2004 to 2008 and enjoyed every minute. We are back temporarily in the UK - but sunshine beckons us again for summer 2009.

3rd October - We're Outa Here

Posted at 8:31 AM, Wednesday, October 3, 2007

Hi All,

See below the synoptic chart for midday today.

As you can see, the low that was sitting over Portugal yesterday has moved eastward and weakened, and the second low that was sitting over the Atlantic has remained virtually where it was - leaving us with sunny weather and variable light winds at Lagos.

As it seems likely this second low with move north-east within 48 hours, the guessing is we'll experience little wind for the first day or so of the four day trip, but by half way, the high will have closed closer to the coast - giving us N'ly winds for the final two days of the journey to the Canary Islands.

It's not perfect - but if we leave pronto we might just make it in time for me to see the Ozzies thrash the poms on Saturday afternoon!

So its a bit of a rush around.  Check out from the marina office, quick shop for last minute provisions, two or three pals to farewell, a load of fuel (enough to motor the whole way if required), and off we jolly well go......

Will be good to be back on the seas - catch you all once we hit Grand Canaria.

Take Care

JOHN

What are Poms ?

Hayz

Hi Hayley

I was told that Poms (correctly spelt POME) derives from 'Prisoners of Mother England'. They say the initials were printed / sewn on to early convict uniforms and the term has remained ever since.
Others say its because early pom immigrants grew lots of potatoes for thier staple diet.
Take your pick as to origins - but today it's a nice friendly Ozzie word meaning English people. Abbo = Aborigine; Wap = Italian; Wogs = Greek; Leb = Lebonese. All absolutely horribly politically incorrect. But all still used without any offense being intended inside Australia.
Cheers
JOHN
