Ierne : Olympic Gold Medalist

February 17, 2006 - Not just any old Ierne

Indeed. Ierne was the last of the First Rule 8 Metres and the first to carry a Marconi rig. Unbeatable in anything under a 4 she proved it when a Norwegian crew to her to Gold athe the 1920 Antwerp Olympics.

She has arrived in Hull after her overland journey from Portugal. Here you can see the unmistakeable Fife dragon motif on the bow . The has engaged Jo Irvine, a gradute of IBTC in Lowestoft to manage the renovation. Jo has a fabulous track record being the first boatbuilder to create a wooden Dragon since 1970.

April 13, 2007 - The Truant

Posted by albertine
Yes - but you fail to mention that The Truant was in fact owned not just by Bob Davidson but by the late Allan Guthrie who was helm and the late Ron Allan - a wily and resourceful man of the seas if ever there was one - and an excellent cook in any sea state! Under these 3 owners The Truant dominated the Clyde racing season for a good handful of years.

It was the these 3 who found The Truant and indeed she was bright yellow and yawl rigged - but not for long. The story is told that shortly after she was brought over the Irish Sea to the West Coast of Scotland and after an enjoyable time ashore at a hostelry of repute - Guthrie, Allan and Davidson returned to their newly purchased prize and forwith took a saw to the mizzen! The Truant sailed as a sloop from that evening.
