Aug. 24, 2007 - MM Day 6

Not only is Brian a dab hand at the penny whistle, he can dive too.

Now on the SW corner of Khios waiting for the wind to drop so we can make our way NW to Psara again!

On Wednesday we had sailed round from Emborios to the beautiful anchorage you see here. We had an early night and left the next morning in the dark at 6am. Our destination was Psara, a small island 10 miles west of the Northern tip of Khios. From Psara the intention was to jump 60 miles West, across the busy shipping lanes to Skiros. From there we were a day from Skoplelos where we could then spend a day recceing (that's how they spelled it in Victor) the various locations then on to Skiathos by Monday with time to spare before we were required for filming on Wednesday.

The Greek God of winds, whoever he/she is had unfortunately not received the email of our plans and so had been working on another one.

This involved us spending most of the day battling into a shifting and building wind which by the time we reached Psara had increased to a gale 8. The only harbour on the island was tight and would present us beam on to this wind so we had not choice but to turn tail back to the nearest safe anchorage: the one we had come from that morning. As we dropped our main and turned back we flew along at 6 knots under bare poles. There had been some hairy moments as we manouevred out side the harbour and in between some tense but controlled gybes, we had torn the luff of the mainsail and lost the dinghy off the back.

We limped back into Limnos bay at 1.30am greeted by an offshore wind which was as hot as the day. We anchored and drew short straws to decide who would swim ashore in the morning to borrow a dinghy for the rest of us.
