Classic Sailing Club members are invited to hear a talk by Dick Durham at 4pm on Sunday 18th March at Pin Mill Sailing Club.
Dick has sailed the East Coast all his life. Friend and crew to Maurice Griffiths and Bob Roberts (the last sail only commercial bargemaster and ex resident of my cottage in Pin Mill), he has many interesting and amusing stories to tell.
"It's been called the Saxon shore, the invasion coast, the most broken coast in England The East Coast, as all yachtsmen call the Thames Estuary, comprises 15 rivers, 50 creeks, an inland sea, the highway to the capital, and scores of sandbanks. It is marked by wrecked ships masts, ghostly gun platforms, and strange Gothic beacons and if you've got three metres under the keel you're sailing in deep water. Inevitably you will run aground. When you do, panic not: the tide will return, in the meantime enjoy a forbidden territory which will soon be reclaimed by the seal and the seagull."
Why not spend the day in Pin Mill. See the fleet, meet other members, have lunch at the Butt and Oyster (I recommend you book ahead on 01473 780 764. Please tell them you are from Classic Sailing Club) and come along to the talk.
Caressa and Marcita are back in the water after their winter refits. Caressa has had her brightwork stripped back to wood and revarnished. Gone is the blue hull and in it's place a very chic ivory. Marcita needed a bit of structural work. Off came her keel to have new bolts fitted. We also took the opportunity to refasten some floors whose fixings are obsured when the keel goes back on. She too has had the expert treatment from Lee Dunnett, or painter and varnisher. Goodness knows how he manages it, but his varnish work is flawless. Night Wind in still in the tent for another week. She's had a repaint and varnish plus Jonathan has been re fitting her galley. Out came the gas stove and in it's place a much more fitting Taylors parrafin stove.
Myfanwy is ashore and next to go in the tent. She won't need that much work, just a paint and varnish. Hampshire Maid has a few more jobs to be done so she will be last in.
All those wanting to come to Dick's talk, please email me ian@classicsailingclub.com or call me on 0870 300 1066
