• Aug. 8, 2007 - Evolution of a Sailing Afternoon

-Olivia rigged and ready to go

I just couldn’t waste another perfect day. The winds are out of the SE around 10-15, the water is blue, the Gulf is calm, no clouds in the sky….and the commander is back. Below is how a sailing afternoon evolves from a simple innocuous email exchange. This one started with a humorous photograph of a power boat having a bad hair day:

Don’t let this happen to you “boat folks”…

One revelation that came to me whilst laying with my head in a pool of toilet water this past weekend, attempting to fix a “terrestrial head”, and that was: it makes no sense to try and fix things on (in) a house.

They won’t sink anyway.

True, true.  When called upon to perform such domestic duties, I recommend responding with the line from Lyell Lovett’s “if I had a boat.”  Are you up for a beer this afternoon?

“Kiss my ass, I’ve bought a boat…..I’m going out to sea”….?

Yes, I believe I am.

That’s the one.

Where and when?  I definitely need to lay eyes on my boat to see if it’s still afloat.

I could do that.  What time do you want to cast off?

Are you through selling shoes for the day?  I’ll need to run by the house and grab my boat keys for a look-see.

The Captains Profile:

Some men and women are born great, some achieve greatness and some slit the throats of any scalawag who stands between them and unlimited power. You never met a man - or woman - you couldn't eviscerate. You are the definitive Man of Action, the CEO of the Seven Seas, Lee Iacocca in a blousy shirt and drawstring-fly pants. You’re mission-oriented, and if anyone gets in the way, that’s his problem, now isn’t? Your buckle was swashed long ago and you have never been so sure of anything as your ability to bend everyone to your will. You will call anyone out and cut off his head if he shows any sign of taking you on or backing down. If one of your lieutenants shows an overly developed sense of ambition he may find more suitable accommodations in Davy Jones' locker. That is, of course, IF you notice him. You tend to be self absorbed - a weakness that may keep you from seeing enemies where they are and imagining them where they are not.
