We're socked in pretty good right now with a northerly blow huffing wind gusts to 40 knots. I'm hoping to be able to get Olivia out of her slip on Sunday when the weather straightens out. Chris is here for the weekend from Austin and as usual, wants to go for "a real sail", which means he wants to go offshore regardless of conditions.
I'm not so down with that though.
The Gulf of Mexico is really one of my LEAST favorite places to sail, at least when there's any semblence of swell, and that means seas bigger than about 2-3 feet. The wave periods are super close together, producing a washing machine effect, which beats the living daylights out of anyone out there.
I don't do gales anymore......
Having fished Alaskan waters, the North Pacific and Bering Sea for King Crab in my younger years, I can honestly say that I would rather put up with a 20 foot sea up there than a 6 foot sea in the Gulf of Mexico. Less pain.
But Chris, being a newcomer to the sea, finds the washing machine a "challenge".
Bull Sh%$ ! I find it a challenge allright.....it's a challenge to see what analgesic will work best after getting back......
The Gulf of Mexico is something to be negotiated and endured. I don't consider it fun at all, unless you call the equivelent of throwing yourself down a flight or two of stairs "fun".
So we'll see.....Chris just might have to settle for tooling around the Laguna Madre this weekend if the seas don't cooperate.
Unless I can get a refill on the empty vicodin bottle in Olivias first aid kit.
