Mishaps and Memories

Jul. 31, 2007 - fitting davits

Having twin aft cabins, locker space is at a premium, and the inflatable currently fills at least 60% of one of these lockers.... on top of this, I am planning on making a rigid tender that will also sport a sail, so that we can go dinghy sailing with the kids, plus row more easily...

All of this suggest that davits make sense, especially now we have a boat that they won't look out of place on....

However...

I'm not really sure how best to fit them..

Here's our transom...

As you can see, we have plenty of space vertically, but the horizontal bit on the bathing platform has lockers in it, so neither strong enough, or sensible to mount them on here... the bit of transom behind the pushpit is sloped, and doesn't have any horizontal area at all...

We can only afford the plastimo davits... these ones...

And so, I need to work out how I get them modified to fit...

Current thoughts are:

get a crank welded into them, and mount them on the vertical surface ie

this however, will prevent them from being able to swivel inwards, and will require their full removal to reduce LOA, plus i'm not sure about the loadings

alternatively, I could get a box made up ie

but this puts a largish stainless 'lump' onto the transom either side.... which may or may not be a problem... the base plate on the davits is 150mm dia, so the box will extend by 20cm or so....

last, but not least, I could get the davits modified so that the mounting plate is angled to match the profile of the sloped part of the transom behind the pushpit ie

This does require carefull checking to see if the davits clear the pushpit neatly, and also has the disadvantage of putting them quite a long way forwards, and thus reducing the reach out over the stern..

Any thoughts, observations, ideas anyone?

Neil,
Option 3 looks the best to me, you might be able to make them plugin too.

Neil,
Been thinking about lack of reach you're concerned about in option 3. Is this really a problem with an inflateable, you might not be able to plonk it straight in the water but it should slither down your sloping transom nicely. A rigid might be more of a concern but if it's a sailing tender for the kids, wouldn't the trips where they are likely to use it goiing to be shorter ones where towing it might be an option, where would you stow the inflatable when the rigid was with you?

Aug. 2, 2007 - tenders

Posted by MagnaCarter
Hi Chris,

The plan is to not carry a rubadub aboard, and use the rigid as the main tender...

We've got a little plywood 7'2" tender in mind, that can have a small gaff rig added, but also can be rowed and carry an outboard when required....

If we ever go anywhere that desperately needs an inflatable rather than a rigid tender, then we'll leave the rigid in the berth, and put the inflatable on the davits... although i'm struggling to think where that might be the case..

At 7'2", we can always stick the tender upside down on the foredeck if its difficult or dangerous on the davits, or as you suggest, tow it...

Aug. 5, 2007 - Rigid dinghy on the stern

Posted by Blueboatman
Hi Neil,nice blog.
There area couple of other possibilities (that you may have already thought about),in which case sorry..
1.Make your own from suitable s/steel tubing get em bent to a template and lugs welded on for the tackles and cleats/jammers. (stainless fabrication can compare quite favorably with off the swindlery shelf prices) and attach em using 2 pairs of u bolts through the vertical panel-it is a very strong arrangement that substantially spreads the load.
2.If you ever are intending to go bluewater on this boat, have a look at some blue water yachts for sale on the net,I have seen radar/solarpanel/windgenerator,bimini frame arrangements with davits as well !
Happy sailing,Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks. Glad you enjoy the blog...

Yes, I am conscious of the opportunity to add lots of extras, which is partially why I don't want to spend a fortune on these, as I am sure down the line, we'll do something more substantial, and as you suggest, more multi-purpose....

I am asking a local stainless fabricator for a quote for the whole davit as well as the mods, because I too suspect it'll be cheaper...

Two stainless plates . Like an inverted L . Would fit under the stern rails . Be nice and strong as in two planes .. Hope you see where I am coming from . These can act as supports for the poles fastened to the bathing platform . If you work it right you could have poles you could remove for measuring in the marina .. So a support at the top and one at the bottom .. Should be able to lift boat with that . Your bracket idea will probably pull loose if you try and lift anything to heavy .. Regards Ian .. Happy Sailing
