Feb. 8, 2007 - what to look for |
Besides the usual list of things that you'd check on a 20yr old boat, i'm told particular points to look at on the Sun Magic are the integrity of the skeg/hull bonding, and the bottom bearing on the rudder, as known weak points...
I guess that the key general things for a boat of this age will be:
-
Keel root and fixings/bolts - particularly as she draws 2.1m and has been sailed in an area of shallow waters
-
Chain plates
-
Leaks in deck and deck hull joint
-
Integrity of deck sandwich, especially around the mast area and chain plates
-
Rigging and sails condition
-
State of the electrics/wiring
-
Engine/gearbox condition - although she's out of the water, so not easy
-
Teak condition in the cockpit - thankfully sh doesn't have teak decks
-
Steering gear
-
Condition of the winches
-
Overall hull condition - knocks, scrapes and discolouration
I could go on and on, but they seem to be the main things... I guess i'll also take a couple of hundred photos for later inspection....
If anyone knows of any other Sun Magic specific weaknesses, then let me know! |

You're going to have fun with that draught where you are! I've just moved up to a Sweden 41 - 2.25m in Poole!
Meet up again at Scuttlebutt Chb 2007 hopefully?
Good luck with the purchase!

Wow,
That'll be fun!
I reckon that a deep keel in shallow water makes you a more competent navigator eventually, out of neccessity!.... not sure what its says about your common sense though!
Yep, all things being equal, i'll be at Cherbourg again in '07... we'll either be there on our own boat, in which case FullCircle has offered himself as crew, or StugeronSteve has offered me a place on his boat again if we either haven't got a boat by then, or decide that the long haul back from Cherbourg to Harwich is a bit much for a lads weekend!!!!! |

| What do you think about the centre companionway? I think I may need to have a foghorn on deck to summon those in the cabin when needed! (I have the same design). Makes for a lovely aft cabin and a nice big cockpit though. I just hope I don't miss the shelter of a sprayhood.. |

I liked the bridge-deck entrance to the companionway for three reasons.... firstly it makes it very safe at sea... much less likely to take water into the boat, secondly, sailing on the east coast, if i do ever put her on the mud, then it dramatically reduces the risk of downflooding on refloat, and last but not least, as you say, it gives a lot more cockpit seating, and space below....
As for getting a sore throat from yelling to attract attention from the sleeping crew below.... well we'll cross that bridge when we get there!... maybe i'll have to invest in a dual station VHF with intercom facilities....!!!
This particular boat still has a very useable sprayhood.... so not going without there.... and we have chatted about possibly at some point also buying a full cockpit tent, although we'll see if we need that when we've got used to all the extra space...
Listen to me... talking as if i've bought the thing.... i've not even been to see it yet!

We have a bimini with side panels and just a "fastnet" style sprayhod over the companionway. Send me your email and I can shoot some pics over - ours is 20 years old too!
