Mishaps and Memories

Oct. 13, 2006 - timings and thinkings

Maggie is being lifted today for her survey, and dropped back in Monday...

Survey is Saturday...

We've been gently exploring what boats we might like to replace her with...

Of course its dependent upon what we sell our house for, and what we have to spend on its replacement, but if the plans work out, then the current favourite is a Beneteau Oceanis 411...

We've been revising our thinking regarding buying brand new. As appealing as it may be to own a brand new boat, with a complete blank canvas for adding extras, a number of people have sensibly commented that there is huge advantage in firstly letting someone else buy all the bits, and living with their choices, and secondly, in letting someone else deal with all the hassles of a new boat and the niggles that go with it...

Having looked at the market, we can get so much more for the money by just going for a couple of years old, and so this will probably be our plan...

If we don't get quite as much as we want in cash difference between properties, we'll just have to downgrade our expectations a little...

Other thing, is that we are also toying with the idea of moving marinas... we are a little fed up with the 9nm trek up the river anytime we want to go anywhere, and add to this the noise from saturday night revellers, and we'll see what the chances are of getting into either Shotley or SYH... prefer Shotley as it seems a bit more cruiser oriented rather than SYH's racing community, and is also a bit easier driving wise, but either would be good in reality....

Oct. 13, 2006 - Shotley or SYH?

Posted by Guapa
As you know, we were @ Shotley with Yanita last year, and now @ SYH with Guapa.
The reasons we moved are the following:
1. SYH's easier to get to. The bit from Fox's to Shotley can take up to 25mins
2. SYH's cheaper
3. If you need to lock in at "rush hour" with the boat size you're looking at, you may have to wait some time (due to your size). Also, in winter lock's OOO for 3-4 weeks.
4. As to racer/cruiser mentality. I don't bother them - they don't bother me. And if you're on a mooring, bliss... + kids enjoy the dinghy ride.

As for both: once you're in the 40+ft realm you will have some problems finding a parking place in the first place.
Our current arrangement seems to work well for us: APR-OCT -> mooring NOV-MAR -> berth

Good luck with the house

Hi Neill + Debs
Seems like a recent "preowned" boat, someone else has had the teething problems, is a vey good idea. Have you considered the market in Holland? Before we went for the new /charter mgt thingie, we spent several weekends "window shopping" in the Netherlands. Don't know if there still are ferries between E England /NL, but if so, might be worth browsing the web + hopping over. One of our favourites is the "yacht supermarket" in Kats see:ikzoekeenjacht.nl/en/yachtlist
At this moment, they have a very nice recent Hanse 411 (and also a small Carter!)
Good hunting!

Oct. 14, 2006 - boats in Holland

Its certainly on our radar.... the prices seem to be a little keener in Holland and Belgium, and getting a ferry across isn't difficult... also Guapa seemed to have a very positive experience with Dutch surveyors compared to British ones....

Oct. 31, 2006 - Racers @ SYH

Yes it is quite a racing club - we are there - but the racing is limited to weekends ( and not everyone at that) mainly Autumn & Spring plus a few other events during the Summer - Old Gaffers, Port of Felixstowe etc. The crews hit the bar at the end of the race when its a scrum but the rest of the time its fine - active cruising section too!!!
