The Adventures of S/V Holding Pattern

Jun. 12, 2007 - We Made It!!!

The wrinkles only go where smiles have been...

Finally!  We're in the Chesapeake Bay!  After 2 days at Coinjock, NC avoiding Harborfest in Norfolk, VA we set forth.  We had made friends with Scott & Lynn on Island Time, a great couple who was behind us in Coinjock.  We made an uneventful trip through the Coinjock & Currituck Sounds to Great Bridge.  There is a free dock in Great Bridge (24 hour maximum stay) and we squeezed in behind a Canadian in the middle of the dock who had been there for 3 days and planned to stay for 3 or 4 more...he ran his engine 3 or 4 times during our time there and stunk everything up with his exhaust...that's minor though.  We walked up to Farm Fresh grocery, (it ranks in the top 5 grocers we've ever seen!) provisioned and walked back.  After dinner onboard we asked Island Time if they wanted to go to Dairy Queen with us.  It had been months since any of us had ice cream, what a delight!

Today we went through the Great Bridge Bridge (great name, by the way) and the Great Bridge lock (which raises you all of 2-3 feet.)  Again, thankfully uneventful.  Norfolk bridges are wonderful, one bridge call the next "Sending you 3 sail and one power..." so they know we're coming and everyone bunched up together to make the openings, a joy in itself.  No stress, no hassle, no drama.

We parted ways with Island Time when we made the turn into Old Point Comfort where we are anchored.  We're the only ones.  We called the military base and asked them about dinghy dock, they gave us directions into the instillation and told us to come on in.  We're heading in very soon so we'll see how that goes.  We'll stay here for a day, get caught up on $work and boat work, get some writing done, get caught up on email, and head on to Yorktown.

We did a dance in the cockpit when we hit Mile 0 on the ICW.  We've now done very close to 1100 miles so far since April.  Heather is taking a much deserved nap, I'm too wound and cleaning the cabin and checking weather, mail, etc.

Hooray for us.
