The Adventures of S/V Holding Pattern

"Be an explorer not a tourist" Anthony Bourdain

We're in Coinjock, NC.  The first dock we've taken since December in Green Cove Springs.  It's a necessity because we couldn't run the entire Virginia Cut in one day with the winds on the nose and needing fuel anyway.  We're old and slow, no apologies offered or needed, we like it that way.

All is well in our world.  We've been alone in anchorages since New Bern, NC.  New Bern, Bonner Bay, Belhaven, Pungo River, Alligator River, North River... and now we've neighbors galore...what a change.

Belhaven was quite nice.  Above City Hall is the Belhaven Memorial Museum... Ripley's Believe It Or Not meets Deliverance... 30,000 button collection, two-headed fetal pigs, human embryos, newspaper from Lincoln's assassination, and too much more to even begin to describe.

The solitude has been magnificent.  Both on the waterway as well as anchorages, we've been one of a very few.  Getting a late start on season means we're out of the Boat Parade that marches forward...fine by us.  We'll go hours and only see one other boat.

Many people think we're crazy by not busting our tails and getting to the Chesapeake ASAP.  Well, who knows what life will bring.  We may never be able to do this again, so we're seeing everything possible now.  95% of it is free, too!  It's really amazing and true...the best things in life ARE free.

We had a great wing-to-wing sail through Albermarle Sound.  (For non-sailors - headsail out to one side and mainsail out to the other...opposite sides of the boat.)

I'll leave it at that.  It's been a good trip, a great time, and a grand adventure.

It's hot, we're both in need of showers, and the sun is quicky dropping.  Time for a sundowner and a wash.
