The Adventures of S/V Holding Pattern

Apr. 11, 2007 - Sweet Reward

A picture of Brian at the helm coming into Fernandina Beach, FL.  See previous blog for a recap of this day...this was mi. 70 of 71 for the day, I could see the anchorage ahead...

We enjoyed two days in Fernandina Beach, FL.  Showed Davey some of our favourite haunts, walked a few good miles, and ate a fantastic meal at Benitos.  We'd never gone before because it looked like an upscale sushi bar, not our type of place.  But we asked a local whore to get a good piece of fish...the Benito's Bento Box.  $6.99 for a enormous piece of fried grouper, salad, black bean cake with slasa and sour cream, and dumplings, drink included.  WOW.  I felt like a king, I haven't been so satisfied by a meal in ages.  (YES, I know I have a typeo there.  I laughed myself to tears when I read it, so I left it...we really asked a local whEre to get fish, she was a respectable shop owner at that...)

We hauled up the anchor this morning and took the last of outgoing tide from Fernandina, rounded Cumberland Sound and made an easy run into St. Mary's, GA.  Lots of dolphin, the morning fog was burning off.  Shorts and a sweatshirt.  Davey navigated for a while until the S-curves of the St. Mary's river.

We love this town.  Went to Read 'Em Again books to sell off a few months of accumulation and swap for some new.  Went to the general store and Shannon, the owner, squealed "Welcome home!  Well, I know it's not your home but it's so good to see you guys..."  It's nice to feel welcome.

Davey seems to like St. Mary's.  After the touristy shops of Fernandina, this is a quaint, friendly, down-home place.  Just over the river the through the woods you begin to hit the real south...and the southern hospitality.  This spring's journey north will be a treat, I think.

But for now, the town is in bloom.  Magnolias, dogwoods...lots of flowering things about and their scent is leaving a wonderful perfume in the air.  Seeing as how the last 3 days have been cold, very windy, and rainy yesterday...today's 82 degrees, full sun, and blooming plants are as good of a gift as anyone could ask for.  We'll stay here through the weekend as Davey leaves Friday morning and the weather offshore is supposed to deteriorate over the weekend.  We'll sit tight and enjoy.
