It's cold and dark outside. Heather is playing string with Takara, the Allman Brothers are playing in the background...it seems like a good time to just type... not many more days of unlimited computer use..I will be glad...this thing is like an addictive cancer. I feel for parents who have to try to wean their kids off of this beast. But we will be in the water by Saturday at the latest.
The jib halyard is ready, forestay almost ready, furling unit on the way, anchor up, paint repaired, doors varnished, prop on, the cockpit even got washed down today.
Being from Ohio we are used to black ice...invisible sheet of ice, deadly. Well we have found a way to recreate this phenomenon on HP. Use the wrong wipes on the floor. We can now ice skate from companionway to Vee...and not the good controlled kind either, we're talking about erratic rat on crack sort of movement. Getting up to go to the head at night requires vigilance else you wake up real quick. On the bright side...with all the dirt here in the yard, it should be back to dirty real soon.
I love when I see actual ways we have changed, it makes me smile to see simplicity has become habit. Recycling and reuse is the norm. Example. Heather comes back from the laundry room yesterday with a canvas box, hard sided, stackable, etc., but only 2 of 3 compartments were usable, the other was broken. She came back, trimmed off the excess canvas and put it into her sewing box. "It will make great patch material, I think." is what she said to me. I got a big grin. Frugal living is the only way we will keep cruising.
On the odd side, I realized today that I have worn the same pants every day here in the yard. They have been washed in between, not much mind you, but work pants are work pants and these fit the bill. I can see:
White Awl-Grip Paint
Blue Awl-Grip paint
Varnish
Blood
33' 5" written in sharpie on the knee (it was all I had available) the measurement
is the luff of our headsail. We took it offboard, put into a wheelbarrow and
took out onto the bulkhead to unroll, measure, and re-roll.
Dirt
Acetone
Pettit bottom paint
iPod headphones sticking out of the pocket. I just leave the headphones there
all the time now.
And thats just above the knees.
Heather has been working on varnishing doors from the battery bank and the quilting template blocks that Bottom Dave made for her from mahogany. They all look beautiful. We're almost put back together, yay!
Well, Heather's mother has put many hours of educational (mostly) tv on dvd for us, I think we're going to sit back and learn about dinosaurs or the cosmos or where babies come from (please don't tape that PBS special!) but the time has come to bid you adieu for now.
Wish us well.
