The Adventures of S/V Holding Pattern

Nov. 3, 2006 - Blustery

It's mighty blustery today.  Gale warnings last night through today made us glad we're in a safe port but it's an uncomfortable day at that.  Sustained 30, gusts to 40 make it a bobbly day out here on the hook.  2 boats have drug anchor, Brian put on foul weather gear and took the dink over to help Greg on Southern Cross re-anchor.  Spent about an hour over there, got him re-set, accepted a handshake and a beer, and went back to HP.

The holding in here is only fair, it seems.  It is very deep, soft, fine silt in here...far from ideal.

So far our 55lb Delta on 100' of chain is doing its job.  We debated dropping the 44lb Bulwagga or the 50+lb Bruce as a secondary but we've held thus far, grey skies are breaking up and more and more blue is visible...plus for the most part winds have died back (though now that I have typed that we have ramped up to the upper 30's again) PLUS it's only 60 degrees or so outside - which is unpleasant when you're taking spray/wet too.

We're charging  like crazy  on the wind generator, it's not a good day to do work on deck or anything to the hull - so we're going to get things looking good inside, maybe get a nap, maybe get ahead on $work, or maybe just surf the internet (something we get to do very little of due to power/time/etc.)

We found a butcher here in Green Cove - has the best smoked meats and the best jerky we've ever had.  Also found a place that you can take your own veggies & meats to have them canned, $5/hr & .50/can.  You can do hamburgers, filet, (they have cans that size!), roast beef, anything you can can (double intended - can can as in able to preserve) Greg gave us a can of his own roast beef as a sample - and it as every bit as good as homemade (no offense, mother, it's true)  So while we're here in town, we'll look into making some delights to cart to the Islands with us.

Miles Davis is wailing in the background, there's a hunk o' jerky in front of me, and a stiff, chill nor'easter blowing.  I'm going to put on a sweater and be a glutton.
