The Adventures of S/V Holding Pattern

Jul. 7, 2006 - The Engine Mutiny

I feel like I am in a bad remake of Mutiny on the Bounty... I am Captain Bligh and the engines onboard have just become mutinous scurvy dogs, trying to usurp my authority.  I will have none of it!

Waylaid, Shanghai'd, Marrooned...they all mean stuck.

Lose one r and maroon is also a color, probably the color of my face right now.

We were preparing to leave St. Mary's.  We enjoyed the firth of the 4th and ready to wander about for a while.  The staysail was ready, water full, everything ready to leave.  As is habit, the day or so before leaving we always run an engine test.

NO!!!!!!!

Oil pressure went crazy, very little water in exhaust, and a near-stall.

Not at all what I had in mind today.

The generator also refused to fire up.  Sometime in the night the engines, more than likely with the consipratorial assistance of the cats, decided to both konk out on the same day.

Did I say that working on the engine(s) is not what I had in mind for today, tonight, or this weekend?  I was hoping to have full sail and a good adventure.

Well, we at least found the adventure.

Stay tuned.
