The Adventures of S/V Holding Pattern

Jun. 29, 2006 - FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions...

We get lots of questions/assumptions about us & our lifestyle, so here is a primer...

If you have a specific question, email at: B_H_Rayburn11@yahoo.com

Do You Work?

Yes.  Brian works for *** (privacy reasons dictate this be omitted) as an Education Consultant.  Big name for crappy job - mostly designing environmental education programs, proofreading other work (which is why I never ever spell check here...) So basically I do the work but never to get to see my results implemented.

Heather does not right now simply becasue of transportation issues.

Do you ever get seasick?

It hasn't happened yet.  We've been through Tropcail Storms Dennis, Katrina, Ophelia, and Alberto; not to mention Hurrican Wilma onboard.  We've been through near gale force with 6+ foot seas.  It has not affected either of us nor has it affected the cats.  They could care less.

What does bother you?

Lightning.  I used to absolutely love the intensity of thunderstorms.  Not anymore.  Lightning gives me the willies...I hate it, I hate, I hate it.  We had a strike within 500' yesterday...my adrenaline was up for an hour after that.

How do you go to the grocery?

We only go about every third week, sometimes once a month...and then it is debatable to call it a grocery trip or not.  We have provisioned once - and still have large stores of canned goods, non-perishables, etc.  When we do go it is for milk, veggies, bread...usually less than half a dozen items (and usually a half a dozen splurge treats too)  When the milk is done we make powdered until we get back.  Bread kept in the microwave stays good forever.  Apples don't spoil out here in 2 months but bananas go the next day.  You can buy them Kermit green today and tomorrow they will be tar black.

But I have not answered the question yet...usually we walk, sometimes we get rides (yes, mother, I take rides from strangers), once in a great while we will walk and get a taxi back to the waterfront (if we have multiple heavy things and the roll cart won't work) and that is usually less than $7 for the cab...

When will you move back to land?

Who knows.  Things are unpredicatable out here.  We live on Island Time so there is no hurry.
