We have taken two more steps that have greatly revolutionized our liveaboard existence and thus decreased our need for land/going ashore/money...
Laundry is a pain in the **** going to land. Especially the part of keeping everything dry and clean on the dink trip back to the boat... so we have found a hand-crank washing machine. It holds about 3 outfits or 2 sheets or a fortnight of underwear. Add warm water (solar shower heats it up in no time thus saving propane...), add detergent, hand-crank to wash, agitate, rinse, etc. Add softener, rinse again. Clothes are very clean and soft. We also have a hand-wringer AKA the mangle. It advertised that it gets clothes up to 3x dryer than spin cycle - and it is true! We even get sheets through! So in half the time of going ashore, we can have the same amount of laundry done. And hanging the wrung articles on the lines in the sunshine and breeze dries them in no time. It takes me back to childhood when all of our laundry was hung out to dry.
Sprouts. We did this when we were dedicated vegetarians. Now that we have backslidden we have resumed this practice. 15-30% protein, most of your daily vitamins in a pure form, and usually close to 100% of A, C, E, etc. And great fiber. It is a great suppliment, so far we're very happy with our sprouting gardens.
It's great to be free...there is a price to be paid, but it is worth every bit! |
