The Adventures of S/V Holding Pattern

Jun. 13, 2006 - The Alberto

First, what in the world???  First tropical system of the season flirts with hurricane status?  It's track is taking it where?  Over us?  Can we get a do-over?  Please?

Here I sit, just past midnight.  These are the kind of anchor watches I like - uneventful.  However I am sure that will change sooner or later.  I like NOAA's wording with this one - "...should closely monitor The Alberto" - yes, they included the word "the" - you know, if they hadn't done that I would have probably walked around following some dude named Alberto...Fat Alberto.  It's late, that joke seemed funny to me...maybe that's what happens to comedians when they bomb on-stage - "It seemed funny when I thought of it last night...."

Ok, anyway.  Our friends on Galago decided to ride out the storm here in St. Mary's with us.  We both set our anchors according to this morning's forecast which sent the storm over us if not south.  Now the storm is forecast to pass to the W-NW of us...which means the protection we sought out so carefully has changed a little.  We still have great protection from 240 degrees by land - low-lying marshland.  Basically not much wind break but not much in the form of waves can build...making the best out of a bad situation.

We have multiple anchors set and others on deck hooked up and ready just in case.  Anchor drag alarm is on and cockpit and decks have been cleared.  The more prepared we are hopefully the less we will have to use it.  Most of the windage has been removed.  Retrospect, the jib should have come down but winds did not allow - at least that is the administration's official version.

Finally, thank God we got the Sprint AirCard in time.  We can now be online onboard.  Which also means better radar.  Don't get me wrong, our radar (named R2D2) is good but live doppler radar is better.  Someday I will be able to afford color radar.  Until then, I will happily sign on and see.

Will post as weather (and hopefully boredom) allows.  Screw any spelling errors.
